Missionary Quotes
Eternal Perspective

Missionary Quotes have always both challenged and inspired me. As you read this page, I think you'll realize most people don't think this way, but at the same time, knowing Christ as Savior, you'll also admit they probably should.

You'll find missionaries reflect an eternal perspective in what they say, more than any other group. As I've perused the internet, and other resources, compiling these missionary quotes, I've found several sites with hundreds of quotes listed, but there never seemed to be much organization.

Missionary quotes would be much more easily absorbed, and used if they were organized by theme. So that is the way you'll find them here.

I'm not sure how many missionary quotes I'll include under each topic, but I am sure that I'll probably expand this collection by adding missionary quotes, whenever I find one that particularly challenges my thinking, blesses my heart, or increases my burden for souls.

These missionary quotes are mostly from missionaries' letters and writings, but some may have been recorded from spoken sermons or conversations. You will also notice that I've included some quotes by pastors along with foreign missionaries when they truly reflect the missionaries point of view.

I trust you'll find this organization useful, and these missionary quotes may be as big a blessing to you, and your ministry, as they have been to me.

Missionary Quotes About God's Call

Hudson Taylor, missionary to China is frequently quoted.

"It is not in our choice to spread the gospel or not. It is our death if we do not." -Peter Taylor Forsyth

"The Command has been to 'go,' but we have stayed--in body, gifts, prayer and influence. He has asked us to be witnesses unto the uttermost parts of the earth...but 99% of Christians have kept puttering around in the homeland." -Robert Savage, Missionary to Latin America

"'Go ye' is as much a part of Christ's Gospel as 'Come unto Me.' You are not even a Christian until you have honestly faced your responsibility in regard to the carrying of the Gospel to the ends of the earth." --J. Stuart Holden

"'Not called!' did you say? 'Not heard the call,' I think you should say. Put your ear down to the Bible, and hear Him bid you go and pull sinners out of the fire of sin. Put your ear down to the burdened agonized heart of humanity, and listen to its pitiful wail for help. Go stand by the gates of hell, and hear the damned entreat you to go to their father's house and bid their brothers and sisters and servants and masters not to come there. Then look Christ in the face --whose mercy you have professed to obey-- and tell Him whether you will join heart and soul and body and circumstances in the march to publish his mercy to the world." --William Booth, Salvation Army founder

"I believe that in each generation God has called enough men and women to evangelize all the yet unreached tribes of the earth. It is not God who does not call. It is man who will not respond!" --Isobel Kuhn, missionary to China and Thailand

You sons of England, here is a field for your energies. Bring with you your highest education and greatest talent; you will find scope for the exercise of them all. You men of God who have resolved to devote your lives to the cure of the souls of men, here is the proper field for you.

It is not to win numbers to a Church, but to win men to the Saviour, and who otherwise will be lost, that I entreat you to leave your work at home to the many who are ready to undertake it, and to come forth yourselves to reap this field now white to the harvest.

Rome is ushering in with her salvation by sacraments, and a religion of carnal ordinances. We want men who will preach Jesus and the resurrection. 'God is a spirit,' and let him who believes that throw up every other consideration and come forth to teach these people to worship him in spirit and in truth. --Alexander Mackay in his last message from Africa.

"I wasn't God's first choice for what I've done for China. I don't know who it was. It must have been a man--a well educated man. I don't know what happened. Perhaps he died. Perhaps he wasn't willing. And God looked down...and saw Gladys Aylward, and God said, 'Well, she's willing.'" --Gladys Aylward, Missionary to China

Missionary Quotes
Their Vision

"But I go out as a missionary not that I may follow the dictates of common sense, but that I may obey that command of Christ, 'Go into all the world and preach.' He who said 'preach,' said also, 'Go ye into and preach,' and what Christ hath joined together let not man put asunder." --James Gilmour missionary to China

"To stay here and disobey God--I can't afford to take the consequence. I would rather go and obey God than to stay here and know that I disobeyed." --Amanda Berry Smith

"People who do not know the Lord ask why in the world we waste our lives as missionaries. They forget that they too are expending their lives...and when the bubble has burst, they will have nothing of eternal significance to show for the years they have wasted." --Nate Saint, Missionary to Ecuador Martyred in 1957.

"As long as there are millions destitute of the Word of God and knowledge of Jesus Christ, it will be impossible for me to devote time and energy to those who have both." --J.L. Ewen

"Cannot the love of Christ carry the missionary where the slave-trade carries the trader? I shall open up a path to the interior or perish."--David Livingstone Missionary to Africa

"Untold millions are still untold." --John Wesley

"If we wait till we run no risk, the gospel will never be introduced into the interior." --David Livingstone

Robet Moffat, missionary to Africa, inspired David Livingstone to go.

"Our God of Grace often gives us a second chance, but there is no second chance to harvest a ripe crop." --Kurt von Schleicher

"The Christian is not obedient unless he is doing all in his power to send the Gospel to the heathen world." A.B. Simpson

"The church must send or the church will end." --Mendell Taylor

"In the north I have seen in the morning sun, the smoke of a thousand villages where no missionary has ever been." --Robert Moffat Missionary to Africa

Missionary-Quotes
Conclusions

Compiling these missionary quotes has been an inspiration to me. I hope they will encourage and inspire you as well.

I collected far more missionary quotes than needed for one web page, so if you'd like more quotes, please visit missionary quotes 2 which covers missionary sayings about their purpose in living, warnings, values, and praying. It concludes with a couple of quoted prayers. The final page quotes 3 covers their sayings about living and dying.

Many of those quoted here, and on the coming pages, will take their places with the saints of Hebrews eleven in God's Hall of Fame when we come to the Judgment Seat of Christ.

Certainly we can be motivated, and inspired to follow their lead by thinking on these quotes, as we serve the Lord here.
